Emissions by sector

In Burundi, national greenhouse gas emissions come mainly from three major sectors:

  • Agriculture : main contributor, representing more than half of the national emissions, due to farming practices, livestock and land use.

  • Energy : The second source, marked by a high dependence on wood energy (wood coal, firewood) and fossil fuels in transport and electricity production.

  • Waste and industrial processes : lower but growing contributions related to solid and liquid waste management and increasing urbanization.

This distribution reflects the profile of a country with a strong agro-pastoral and traditional energy dependence, but with significant reduction opportunities via:

  • modernising agricultural practices,

  • the energy transition to renewable sources,

  • and improvement of waste management.
